Striking the Right Chord

Music has always been a source of inspiration and a way of ending pathos and gloom by drifting away into its glorious tunes. It has been seen a way of relaxation and enjoyment especially after a day's work or simply letting your hair down when the party begins on the dance floor. There have been many books written on music and its various pioneers but there are always some books which stand out from the rest, mainly because of their content as well as the way in which the art of music is described.

Most of us have a favourite form of music or genre, should I say and we stay glued to it mostly. But once we are able to get out of the clich tracks that surround us and explore other genres, we can gain a better perspective of music. There are various forms of music, some more known and popular than others, which have found their own place in the hearts of people. Here are ten books which talk about the same and help you in understanding music better.

The first book is Nicholas Cook's Music: A Very Short Introduction. It is a mystery how Cook has been able to cram so much of knowledge and understanding of the art in so less. Each page of this book is aimed at the seasoned voyeur of music as well as the novice and has a bit for everyone else, the fringe watchers. If there was one definitive book on music and all its harrowed genres, then this is it!

The second book we are going to talk about here is This is your Brain on Music by Daniel Levitin. He is a musician as well as a scientist. Weird combination, you might say! But boy, does it work wonders! He combines the two and puts down his experiences to explain to us what happens when we interact with music as listeners, composers or performers. Another important book which explains to us the nitty-gritties of music and the effects it has on us.

All of the above discussed books and many more on the art of music can be found on the pioneer website for books, Book Chums. You can buy them as books or e-books and even download many of the same for free! Good deal, huh?
